Christmas & all the trimmings!!!

by on Jan.04, 2010, under The Family

all the snow we had!!! :(

all the snow we had!!! :(

December turned out to be rather busy, as I’m sure most parents find!!!

Between working, keeping “house”, being a mum, taxi services to the older kids!, shopping for (& wrapping) presents for five kids and a huge network of family, making & baking, preserving & pickling…….

Decorating the Christmas Cake!

Quick kiss for Santa!

I also managed to create our usual “Santa scene” (plus an added nativity scene this year ) outside the house, provide the girls school with four hours of Disco, & a couple of hours “chocolate fountain” & “Candy floss” services to their Christmas Coffee Morning….

…..Also managed to sneak in a few other “bits & Pieces!!!!!”  ;)

So by Christmas Eve having sent the three excited younger off-spring on their way, armed with empty Santa Sack to their beds…..it was with much joy I sat down to my traditional “Hot Pork” sandwich and a glass of wine……I have to say it is (always) the best part of Christmas for me, the excitement as a kid of Christmas Eve was almost too much too bare, as an adult witnessing my own kids excitement is ace but there is just something quite magical about Christmas Eve. By 9′oclock  my parents had left – which left the last two off-spring to be “persuaded” into an early retirement!!! Then the real work started – turning the lounge into “santa’s Grotto” !!!!!!

Santa's Grotto!!!

Santa's Grotto!!!

Christmas Day Lunch was highlighted with a toast to “Granddad Ron” with Nanny bravely holding on to her tears, his photo proudly sitting next to her placed there thoughtfully by Alethea! & also to Uncle Moss sadly missed by his family – & a quick toast to all those who couldn’t be with us for whatever reason…..

Boxing day was traditionally celebrated with “cold meat & Pickles” (after Christmas Eve’s Hot pork sandwich probably my favourite meal) A day full of Karaoke, train sets & a glass or two of wine!!!!  ;)

I guess that’s Christmas done!!!  Today the four kids went back to school, decs are down, back to normal……

To all those “Twitter Peeps” who read this my sincere apologies for the lack of “tweets” from “TheBruvs” & “Mrdarcy” over the month of December I guess they have been busy also……Christmas takes up time for even the furry four-legged creatures!!!!!

Errr which pressie was this bow for??

Stable manners

by on Dec.14, 2009, under The Family

It was that time of year – Tears from one of my girls and bursting pride from the other…..why?

Who got the best part in the Nativity play!!!!!!!

The School rotate the Christmas production, one year it is held in the local Church & has the traditional feel of nativity,  the following year it is in the School hall & is usually a big musical production. This year it was to be the Church with a play called “stable manners” – a modern twist on the traditional nativity.

With only just over 80 children in the School ranging from the age of four to eleven, the productions raise a smile & a tear every year. So it was with bated breath I waited to hear exactly what “parts” Athena & Alethea had been awarded!!!!.

It was good news and bad……Athena had auditioned and secured the main part of Mary!!!……Alethea’s class was told they would ALL play the part of “shepherds” …………One not very happy 7 year old mixed with one very excited 10 year old could only mean one thing – “fireworks”

Athena started to learn her lines…….& announced that “Mary” actually gave birth in this play…….WHAT?????????  Now anyone who knows Athena will understand that this made me a little uneasy – always up for a laugh Athena….mmmmmm just how far would she play the part!!!!

mmmm...Do not think Virgin Mary posed like that!!

mmmm...Do not think Virgin Mary posed like that!!

The play was (as always) a fantastic production, the headmaster, I believe has missed his vocation – although a fab teacher, he excels in the Drama productions. It never ceases to amaze me how “word-perfect” the children all are in a show that generally lasts an hour and this year was no exception.

Athena played her part very well (hey I know I’m biased!!!) although her solo singing could be tweaked a little – her and Joseph looked and bounced off each other brilliantly, and not at all fazed about performing in front of a completely packed out church of 100+ people – TWICE!!!.

Mary & Joseph...

Mary & Joseph...

As Joseph laid his hand on Mary’s belly – she gave out a loud cry “Joseph, I think it’s time – the baby is coming”  (Ok so far so good!!!), the animals crowded round, Joseph ran for bowl & rags…(Oh dear here we go)…Mary lets out a scream….(duck head, maybe no one will look at me)….the animals all move away to reveal Mary cuddling “Baby Jesus” with a grinning proud Joseph looking on…..(big round of applause…big sigh of relief)

Joseph checks out Bump!!!!

Joseph checks out Bump!!!!

Joseph armed with essentials!!!!

Joseph armed with essentials!!!!

You can put the bowl down now Joseph!!!!!

You can put the bowl down now Joseph!!!!!

Then my eyes filled as my daughter – dressed as Mary welcomed “Baby Jesus” into the world & promised to love him forever – she then sang a lullaby to him…..Joseph joined in the lullaby….not a dry eye in the Church!!!

Joseph & Mary sing their baby to sleep...

Joseph & Mary sing their baby to sleep...

After the visitors of wise men, animals etc…….on came the Shepherds!!!!!!

and Alethea……

My cheeky Shepherd!!!!

My cheeky Shepherd!!!!

Who I have to say did fantastic also, for someone who does not usually feel comfortable in the limelight, she sang her heart out…..and looked ace!!!

Alethea & her fellow shepherds!!!

Alethea & her fellow shepherds!!!

One little four year this year grabbed the headlines……Over 80 odd children she could be heard with her not so mellow tones….belting out most of the songs – and when it came to the four year olds, all dressed as angels, to sing softly to “Baby Jesus” she lead the choir in her very special version of “away in a manger”……..tears once again in Church…..from laughter…..bless her.

The play on both performances received thunderous applause, cheers & whistles…..it’s really what Christmas is all about – “The Kids”

Well done to all the staff & children of Llansantffraid Primary school…….but especially to my two girls…..very proud of you both….*X*X*

My four kids!!!!

My four kids!!!!

I hope you all have a very happy Christmas and a peaceful, healthy New Year…….*X*     Sharon.

Every family needs a pup!!

by on Nov.17, 2009, under The Family

After what was a shaky start between Alethea (my little animal lover) and Tikka…it now seems the bond is well and truly cementing!!!

When Tikka first came….she was a VERY energetic pup who “mouth” was often to be found at “bottom level” of the kids…..since going on the BARF diet not only has she calmed down considerably, she is now responding to commands from the kids….to see my little two year Kal telling Tikka to “sit” & then rewarding her with “good girl” is simply wonderful!!! (although she still has her moments with poor Shae – insisting on dragging his trousers off whenever she meets him…..I wonder if she will be still doing that in a few years time!!!!! ;)   )

anyway I thought I’d share a moment the other day with you…..Alethea came home, jumped in Tikka’s bed…..I will let the following pics tell you the story!!!!!!

Hey did you miss me while I was at School?

BARF – The only way to go

by on Nov.10, 2009, under The Family

After picking our pup up from Joanne Clayton I had two weeks of “cow pat” poos from Tikka…..she went off the food that she had gobbled up with Joanne (Eukanuba) refusing to eat it with….so some very quick research lead me to James Wellbeloved…..a natural comercial dry dog food, thinking that Tikka might be suffering from a reaction to the Eukanuba. The first couple of meals she cleared her dishes, breathing a sigh of relief (this was worse than weaning the four kids!!!!!) ………………but I was still getting half a dozen to a dozen cow-pats a day (& night).

The problem was surely these “cow-pats” were not doing poor pup any good?  & although she was very good letting me know when she wanting to go out…..cleaning down her “toilet” area each time was becoming very laborious!!!

Then came her second lot of vaccinations…..within 24 hours her poo had got worse and within three days she actually had blood in. After talking to our Vet, Tikka was fasted for 18 hours and then placed on Chicken & rice…..Her first solid poo was cheered (pathetic I know!!!)

Not wanting to put her back on comercial Dog food….I spent what seemed like 24 hours glued to the Internet soaking up every last piece of information I could lay my hands on…..the end result was

BARF

BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones and Raw Food. This diet is all about feeding dogs (and cats) properly and returning them to their evolutionary diet.

A Biologically Appropriate diet for a dog is one consisting of raw whole foods similar to those eaten by the dogs’ wild ancestors. The food must contain such things as muscle meat, bone, fat, organ meats, vegetable and fruit materials combined in precisely the correct balance just as Mother Nature intended…..so that’s exactly what she was put on.

Why did she suddenly have loose stools on the commercial diet?

She had been weaned successively on Eukanuba…and was eating and pooing nice firm stools. However the day before she came to live with us she had her first vaccination. The following day she had diarrhea (we thought the change & parting from her siblings may be the reason). Her stools continued to be “cow-pat” until after her second vaccination, they then became very loose and also had blood in them. Now the connection with the vaccinations lead me to research even further.

It is my belief that the vaccination has caused Tikka Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) which had lead to her becoming very sensitive to the commercial dried dog food. Not only did she have loose/diarrhea, she also suffered from the most horrendous wind (believe me she could clear a room!!!!)….she was also VERY excitable and a little nippy (which of course we put down to her being a pup!!). Another symptom she had was constant scratching, she was de-flead when we got her and another application two weeks later, but still she scratched!!!!!

and now?

After being on the BARF diet for nearly one week I now have a contented puppy whose stools are firm, have no odour at all and she only “toilets two/three times per day (sleeps all through night!!!!!), her scratching has decreased dramatically, her coat is glossy & she seems calmer (OK she still has her mad loopy Labradoodle moments) but she is more responsive to commands and has stopped all nipping……and above all NO BAD WIND PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!! At meal times she whines with excitement & when the kids have a piece of fruit it is absolutely lovely to watch a 11 week old puppy offering a paw very gently in return for a piece of apple or segment of orange!!!

Most of you who read this know that I have five children and work from home so preparing Tikka’s food on a daily basis would be virtually impossible…..so after again trawling the Net I came across what looked to be a fantastic alternative… www.naturalinstinct.com who have been kind enough to allow me to “sing their praises” . There are a few UK based companies out there who actually produce a “ready-made” BARF diet up that you simply order and rip open then feed your dog….but what struck me most about NaturalInstinct was the fact that they truly believe in what they are producing, having fed their own Welsh Terrier, Maggie, who HAD suffered from ear problems. The site was simple to use & not too commercial/glossy looking. The support via e-mail was fantastic (hey OK I might be an experiencedmum….but young puppies are a different ball-game!!!!)…..anyway I am so impressed by them, the product and Tikka’s improvement (& waggy tail/clean bowl!!!!!) have just ordered the next 10 weeks (or so) food from them.

You might be thinking “that sounds expensive”……it’s not!!! £2.30 – £2.90 will get you a 1kg bag of food…for Tikka this is actually divided into 5 meals (the “recommended” average states that puppies should be fed up to 10 % of their body weight. Therefore, if your pup weighs 10 lbs you should feed 1 lb of food divided between 3 or 4 feedings per day…..For Tikka the cost is approximetly £1.50 per day…probably less than it would cost for three tins of Dog food……She does have treats of fruit & raw veg & dried Liver & every other night has a raw bone for her “tea-time” meal, after being fed the “bulk” of comerical food she took some adapting to the smaller portions….but has now settled and now appears content on the amount ;)

While I fully appreciate the opposite side of the coin…..

Parasites and Bacteria

One of the biggest concerns about feeding dogs raw bones and meat is the risk of contamination (of both dog food and human food surfaces) with bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli. But to be honest my family have raw food placed upon the surfaces most evenings before it is cooked, I have never had any problems yet!!!!. While raw meat may carry these kind of bacteria, they have also been found in commercial kibble and other foods, and a more wholesome diet may equip the body better to deal with the inevitable infections and parasites by boosting the immune system.

Bacteria and parasites may be picked up any number of other places – such as sniffing or licking other dogs at the park, or walking over ground where another animal has defecated and later licking paws clean. Every animal will be exposed to parasites in bacteria – but for the sake of minimizing risks, some owners prefer to avoid the raw meat BARF diet, However after Tikka has licked her bowl clean(!!!) usually 5 minutes, I take the bowl up and it is washed ready for next time.

Some veterinarians claim there is an increased risk of seizures and other bacteria-related illness in dogs who are fed raw; other vets claim to have seen no BARF-related bacteria or parasitic infections and even recommend BARF.

Is BARF a “Balanced Diet”?

Commercial kibble manufacturers claim that their foods are nutritionally balanced and perfect for every dog. In fact, there is very little research on pet nutrition….I strongly believe that just taking a good look at your dog will tell you everything you need to know & it is what works for you & your dog.

Bone Splinters

There is some concern about bone splinters, even from raw bones, causing internal damage to the esophagus and intestine of pets.

Fans of the BARF plan are insistent that raw bones do not splinter and are safe for dogs to chew and ingest. Raw bones are also said to be an ideal source of calcium, amino acids (protein), minerals, and other nutrients…..The other night Tikka was feed a raw Chicken wing (she has had two before no problems) however she swallowed the one half of the wing completely much to my horror (she is never left alone with a bone) all because she wanted to play with the cat!!!!. Now I knew the bone had to come out & was praying her intestine would cope with it, however her system went one better, three hours after eating the bone she literally threw it up, all that she eaten had passed through her safely the bone came back up on it’s own!!! She was not ill she just “got rid” of what she did not need!!

There are persuasive arguments in favor of and against feeding a dog raw food. Ultimately, the decision is that of the pet owner and must depend on the veterinarian’s recommendations as well as the health and specific needs of the dog….for Tikka and me?

Waggy tail at meal times tells me everything!!!!!!!

One Happy Puppy!!!!

One Happy Puppy!!!!

Although Tikka being the intelligent Puppy that she is……can often take the BARF diet a little too far……Bones & Raw Meat do NOT include poor old Mr Corky!!!!!!!

Nice try Tikka!!!!

Tikka’s first trip to the Seaside

by on Oct.29, 2009, under The Family

Sunday morning and while I bathed Tikka was in the Kitchen with all her toys, the kids in the lounge playing ….

Or so I thought!!!!!!!!!

Actually Tikka was in the kitchen……..but so was Mr Corky, who was being rather naughty!!!.  He was sat on the side “pawing” objects onto the floor…..straight into the jaws of Tikka!!!

A packet of fruity polos, a calendar, two school forms!!!!! all devoured…..Mr Corky was caught in the act just pawing my mobile phone down for the poor, eager pup to play with!!!

A long walk was needed….to run off those polos and January through to December that she had eaten!!!!!…….with all the kids & one puppy there was really only one place….the seaside!!!!. They were all bundled into the car and an hour later were running on the Beach at Abergele!!!!!

Athena & Shae

Athena & Shae

Come on boys...lets RUN!!!!

Come on boys...lets RUN!!!!

It was a beautiful day….windy but warm. The kids & Tikka had so much fun running, jumping & chasing the waves, although Tikka, Athena & Shae got caught out a couple of times!!!! and ended up with VERY wet jeans & shoes…..and fur!!!!

Run Run Run!!!!!

Run Run Run!!!!!

It cost just the petrol up there….No ice-creams, no sweets, no wanting…..just a couple of hours of FREE fun, the kids got so much out of having Tikka to play with…..and I ended up with four tired but happy kids…..and a puppy who slept all the way home, with her head on my foot….and who has repaid her trip to the seaside with so many licks & kisses I have lost count……one happy pup!!!!

One very happy content Tikka!!!

A week on…

by on Oct.21, 2009, under The Family

Well Tikka has been living in my mad house for a week today!!!……and I can honestly say she seems to have adopted to us just as much as we have to her…..her constant waggy tail & eagerness to please says it all!!!!

Tired work chasing all these cats!!

Tired work chasing all these cats!!

and to celebrate her week……..last night she slept right through the night…..from 10 til 7 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is one of the smartest dogs I have ever come across….Already she knows to sit, fetch and “toilet” is outside….yesterday she nearly got “munched” alive when she rang her “bell” and on opening the door instantly had a pee outside!!!!!!!

Her relationship is building with the kids….although she seems to favour Shae….I think his loud giggles just appeal to her “Doodle” nature!!!

Talking of relationships…..Mr Corky (the cat) is absolutely obsessed with Tikka….and torments the poor pup!!! they can often be found with Mr Corky on a chair or table (always above Tikka!!!) paw raised ready to give a quick sharp bop to Tikka’s nose with Tikka literally dancing round barking with delight!!!……………..it is lovely to watch, very entertaining.  Since Tikka’s arrival Corky has taken on the role of “top cat” (A role previously graced by Botsi, who passed away a few weeks ago). Corky has become very dominate with the other three cats….especially with his full-blood brother Ceylon. His teasing Tikka has made her respect him completely (along with the few bops on the nose!!!) whereas the remaining three cats are all “fair-game” to Tikka…..and she chases them relentlessly!!!!!!

Step away from my pint Mutt!!!!

Step away from my pint Mutt!!!!

Tikka is intelligent & I do not underestimate the amount of training & the daily responsibility ahead of me….but hey within 360 days she will hopefully appreciate her boundaries, be adored by all and will have molded into our family…….and at least she will never bounce off full of hormones, consider me just a “taxi service” or moan about whats for tea!!!!!

Day two…

by on Oct.15, 2009, under The Family

Well last night Tikka only wanted “the toilet” once….at just after 1 we plodded downstairs and did our business….then she wanted to play. OK I conceded last (again) she’s only a baby….but tonight….we are going to be firm….A midwife once told me off for talking to my baby during the night….”always change the baby, fed it, low light…never talk to it!!!…I have carried this through four children and have never had any issues of getting newborns to sleep through the night in the first few weeks…..

….if I can crack four kids I can crack this bundle of chocolate cuteness!!!!

So tonight she can go “toilet” then it’s back into her bed….NO PLAY!!!!….more sleep for me.

BTW……I washed her “bed” yesterday in washing powder/softener that was fragranced with Lavender….it was something I have always done with my babies….now whether she slept through only waking once because of this….or she feels more settled? anyway if you have a pup who demands your attention in the wee hours it’s worth a try!!!! (or baby – I used to bath my babies just before bedtime, in the bathroom, door closed. fill a bowl/sink with hot water to which I would infuse with two drops of Lavender oil…..the scent would softly fill the bathroom..result one very sleepy baby…believe me it works a treat…it’s also great way of clearing snuffly babies…use a drop of eucalyptus oil)

Today she is definitely more settled….I have been able to leave her for short periods (makes “doing the washing” a whole lot easier than having an 8 week old fun loving Labradoodle “help”) and her ability to understand is just amazing me. Already she will “sit” , simply by saying the word Sit before putting her food bowl down, giving a “treat” etc…..I did not expect to get this from her for a couple of weeks, she just soaks up everything….takes it on board and remembers!!! To her “sitting” is her way of saying “please” (and cute manners like that will work every time!!!!)

She is very taken with having a collar & lead on….and going for a “walk” into the front garden… within minutes she has “toileted” (she has obviously sussed that if you get toileting out of the way you get more time sniffing round and playing!!!!) No “accidents in the house today….So well done Tikka!! Putting the hours in yesterday and today, just taking her outside when she wakes up, feeds, plays etc hopefully will pay off in the long run for both Tikka and me. The bell that is now hung (a small goats bell, which every time I take Tikka out gets nudged) has been nudged a couple of times by her….but only through curiosty, I think in a couple of days she will be ringing the bell to signal her need to go out, rather than me second guessing her….finger crossed.

I read somewhere that never have a labradoodleif you wanted a guard dog (although she did bark at the vacuum this morning…and tried to attack the mop!!!)….and I can see that…her waggly tail is constant, her chubby bum swings with so much pleasure you just have to smile!!! and I’m sure I have lots of years ahead of me chasing her round the house to retrieve whatever bit of laundry she is “retrieved” or wiping up after her tail has knocked yet another cup over…..but I am convinced that while she bounces through life she will always bring a huge smile of both pleasure & pride…she is my loopy, faithful, smart Labradoodle…  ;)

Tikka Our Labradoodle Pup

by on Oct.14, 2009, under The Family

Labradoodles

are a relatively new breed of dogs that were first bred by Wally Cochran in 1988. Wally Cochran, of The Royal Guide Dogs in Victoria Australia, was prompted to breed the Labradoodle after receiving a request from a blind woman living in Hawaii. She needed a guide dog that wouldn’t aggravate her husband’s allergies. Hair and saliva samples from 33 different poodles in Hawaii were sent to the couple to see if the dogs would cause an allergic reaction in the husband; they all did. Wally then asked the manager of The Royal Guide Dogs about crossing one of their Labrador Retrievers with a Standard Poodle. He agreed, and so the first Labradoodles were bred…

So a Labradoodle – with it’s outstanding track-record for being  sociable, friendly, non aggressive, and extremely intuitive was the breed we wanted.

Having decided upon welcoming a dog into our family, it was clear that we could not re-home an adult dog, with five kids, four cats & five goldfish the dog needed to be a young puppy, so that it grew up in our busy household….and our busy household could continue to grow up alongside him or her!!!

Two weeks of searching the internet we came across Joanne Clayton – a truly wonderful lady who just lives for her animals. She had a shaggy coated, chocolate coloured little girl out of a litter of three needing a forever home….within an hour we were in the car and having our first cuddle!!!!!!!….with the puppy!!!!!

and on the 13th October at 11.30 “Tikka” was taking her first trip back to her home….

Tikka

Tikka

Her full name (we joke) is Chicken “Tikka” Bhuna Masala……as most of my animals tend to take their names from an Indian Menu!!!!

We were fully prepared for “accidents” sleepless nights, and a little pup who cried constantly for the loss of her siblings and mummy……what we were completely thrown by was the cheeky, fun-loving little bundle of chocolate scrumptiousness that decided that “Yeap this house is gonna be my home….and I love it!!!”  She settled in so well….with only a couple of little “pees” on the kitchen floor Tikka soon discovered that if she goes “Toilet” outside she gets a “treat”…….which has lead to the rather intelligent little girl “squeezing” a tiny pee out just to get a treat!!!!!

Her first night was spent next to me….in her “bed”. She woke me up three times….each time she needed the “toilet”. Apart from at 3 o’clock she decided that it would be a good time to “play”………so we did!!!!  Tikka and me playing “fetch” until 3.40 – she decided enough was enough and flopped down beside me….looking at me as if to say “think it’s time to sleep now!!!”

The Cats???……Corky is just fascinated….I am sure he has something up his sleeve with regards to Tikka, maybe he thinks she will help get him into the garden across the road (where they have ducks, chickens and also a very big German Shepherd!!!) He keeps his high ground but refuses to leave the room. Mr Darcy is sulking. Danny just takes everything in his stride. and poor old Ceylon just can not understand why we have this “bouncing smelly dog” in the house he has retreated to a safe place.

The kids??…..the boys absolutelyadore her….she loves to run, jump & skip with them – and has already developed a technique to relieve poor Shae of his trousers!!!!! She holds on to them he runs the trousers get pulled lower & lower!!! Athena & Sophie are smitten……it is my little animal lover Alethea who is the most weary of Tikka – with time I am sure she will overcome her slight apprehension

Running, jumping skipping....

Running, jumping skipping....

Come on Kal let's play!!!

Come on Kal let's play!!!

So her first 24 hours have gone relatively smoothly!!!…..I feel a little like a “new mum” ……auto-pilot – eyes open but body just carrying out everyday functions!!!! will be in bed by 9 tonight and praying for her to “sleep through” (brings back memories!!!!!)

Her “training” starts today. I have a couple of “goats bells” which are going to be placed by the kitchen door, each time we go out to “toilet” I will ring the bell…..hopefully Tikka will eventually switch on to the fact that if she needs to “toilet” she can just nudge the bells!!! In theory it sounds great………watch this space.

I’ll leave you with our new baby….who I am sure is going to totally disrupt all our lives in every which way or form….but I love it!!!!

Birthday Boys !!!

by on Sep.21, 2009, under The Family

So my boys were 2 and 3 this week, Kal celebrated his 2nd Birthday on Tuesday (15th) andShae reached the grand ole age of 3 on Friday (18th).

It does not seem five minutes ago since they both entered the world….and now here we are unwrapping play cookers and tractors!!!!!

Shae - 9 hours old.

Shae - 9 hours old.

Kal 3 hours old just arrived home

Kal 3 hours old just arrived home

When we shopped for the boy’s birthday, we decided that kal’s love of food had to play a part. We  chose a play cooker which had absolutely brilliant sound effects, the hobs actually looked “hot” when switched on….andthe “sizzling” from the grill just made your mouthwater!!!!!! Along with that we discovered a set of stainless steel pans (knowing that plastic pans would not impress Kal!!!) and the food was all velcro so that  Kal could practise the art of cutting/chopping!.  For Shae it had to be “wheels” so he had his first garage….complete with sound effects!!   ;-(

Kal was completely enthralled with all his presents (even the few clothes he had brought him!!) he loved the fact that under that beautiful wrapping paper there was something very special…..it was great to hear him “wow” and “arrrrrr” over his presents….then get excited over what was inside…… I am convinced a few of relatives and friends would have just scooped him up and taken him home given the chance…each being made to feel that the present they had bestowed upon Kal was “simply the best” he had ever had!!!!!!! Kal finished his birthday off with a gathering of family, friends and a few waifs & strays….. quarter pounders, sausages & fresh fruit salad was kal’s choice of Birthday grub….washed down with Shandy Bass!!!.  As we all raised a glass to Kal, he sat very quietly watching….then realising the “toast” was for him raised his cup, grinned and announced……”Cheers Kal!!!!!”

Kal enjoying the presents!!!

Kal enjoying the presents!!!

ready...steady....BLOW!!!!

ready...steady....BLOW!!!!

Mummy & Kal cutting the cake!!

Mummy & Kal cutting the cake!!

Then on friday we did it all again!!!!……Shae being Shae, found opening presents at first to much of a chore……..so Kal opened his presents then handed them over!!!!!!!!!  Shae was actually more impressed by the £10 he had received in one of his cards…..to which he exclaimed “I have a letter….it’s important!!!!”  Shae had insisted leading up to his birthday that he had wanted a “chess” none of us actually play chess….we had questioned the nursery where Shae attends….they had not mentioned chess…..so we were unsure where his obsession with wanting a chess set had come from…..not to let him down we got him a chess set…..he was made up…..his first game wi Athena went well….although the second game with Alethea did not…….he accused her of “cheating”……. We may have to clue ourselves up on the game… !!!

….and Shae’s Birthday tea….. he chose “hot dogs” & chocolate cake…..and chocolate…..chocolate!!!!!….all washed down with “bubbles” of Lemonade.

Shae actually opening one of his presents!!

Shae actually opening one of his presents!!

emmmm...and only three!!!

emmmm...and only three!!!

Quick Shae...before Kal blows them out!!

Quick Shae...before Kal blows them out!!

So that’s it for another year…… we had a lovely two days….both boys enjoyed their Birthdays….and their presents….(which I still have to find room for!!!!!…..) even managed to get a picture of all the kids…… very rare!!

First day at school

by on Sep.01, 2009, under The Family

Three years ago today I was heavily pregnant with Shae…. 17 days later Shae made his entrance into the world. Today at 9 o’clock Tuesday September 1st Shae made his entrance into the “School world”

Our local school has just started a provision for two year old…. from 9 until 12.30 they have their own little classroom, dining room and have the chance to socialise with all the school children including the teachers. The very relaxed atmosphere…..involving lots of play in a very small group. it allows the two/three year olds a chance to taste school life before they start at the age of four, where they will be in a larger classroom/number,  it also prepares these little people gently for the next 14 or so years of academic life.  Parents are welcome to stay. I vividly remember my eldest child’s first day at school, she cried…..actually it was bordering scream, She had only really had 6 months of nursery experience….and any toddler group was always with me present. So for Shae the transition and his first official day at school this time next year (Wales start school at the age of four) will hopefully be easy for him……and me…. ;o)
So today (two days before the start of the school term) Shae started “Ladybirds”  Athena went along with him….the school seemed very quiet with only the couple of “new ladybirds”  but it was lovely for them to get used to their surroundings without the “noises” of a full school. Shae came away at the end of the session absolutely “bubbling” he skipped and hopped home full of what he had done….although as soon as he entered the door he started ripping his shirt and trousers off and announced he “wanted dressing”……jeans and tee-shirt.
I appreciate that after speaking to a few parents that sending your child to school at the age of two is somewhat daunting and in some cases opposed to and that there is various reports/studies done showing two sides…… but for Shae
His shiny bright face when we went to pick him up answered any doubts!!!! He thoroughly enjoyed his couple of hours playing with new things, and for me I know that Shae will gain confidence, knowledge, happiness and new friends……what more could a parent want?
