Our first Christmas in Oswestry!

by on Feb.02, 2011, under Always Special

So many people ask “how was the shop over Christmas?” ….one word ……”WOW!!!”

We approached Christmas hoping we were going to be busier…little did we actually know just how busy we would be!!

As it got nearer to Christmas the snow dropped…causing havoc on the UK postal system…sending those who had ordered online into the shop to pick up extra gifts just in case products ordered did not make it through on time, added to that our regular customers who all year had promised to do their “complete Christmas shop” in my shop, and then the first time customers/browsers all adding up to a December that was manic.

The last Saturday before Christmas we smashed our daily record for puchases and customers. That’s it we thought, probably the busiest we will ever be….the shop had customers in from the time it opened at 9.30 until we finally closed the door an hour and half after the usual closing time!!

IT WAS NOT THE BUSIEST DAY!!!

The final week in the run up to christmas was hectic…with three huge deliveries of bath products that week, we were replacing stock as quick as loretta could make it!!! Christmas eve dawned and I was determined to close the shop shortly after dinner and get home to the kids. Figuring that it would be quiet, most people would have done their shopping???

NOPE!!!! Christmas eve kindly smashed the Saturday before by 2 o’clock I knew going home as early as I had hoped was not going to happen…by 3 o clock I wanted to lock the door….by 4 o’clock I did lock the door….turned half the lights out…..to comments like “oh are you closing?” …..(mmmmmm….I do have a life and a few little kids at home who would like to spend some time with me on Christmas eve!!!)

After a very quick tidy round, Z-report and while waiting for Andy to close downstairs there was a yound guy knock the front door…we are closed I mouthed….he placed his hands together and pleaded….DAMN….I unlocked the door.

This guy had ten pounds to his name, he had spent £6 over the road with the “Leather man”  still needed to get home to his mum…and needed a present for her…..I’m a sucker for a sad story….needless to say the guy’s mum would be happy this Christmas!!!!

As I stood at the door….I very proudly wished my little shop, in Oswestry,  a very Happy 1st Christmas – Thanked it for everything.  Lots of people often say 20 Leg Street is a lucky shop, previous owners “Gooseberry Boutique” has grown fantastically, Upstairs/downstairs is one of the best Cookware shops around….all started in 20 leg Street. So fingers crossed that 2011 can be as good as last year….if not better!!!

Thank you to all our customers/friends/family for the support of making me believe in Always Special – The Gift Shop, Oswestry.

:)

Happy New Year Always Special x

Oswestry – Always Special gift shop gets a 2nd floor!

by on Oct.06, 2010, under Always Special

From the title, you can guess that I have finally opened the second floor!!

Sounds easy…. mmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!

taking away the joys and stresses at home..I think another page will be dedicated to all that! Opening the second floor in the shop was probably more stressful than actually opening the first floor!!! The reason we did it in three days!!!

The days of extended the bottom of the stairs  – making it easier for the customers to come down, painting, replacing floor boards, lighting, security cameras, trips to ikea after work for the tables/shelving, putting the stock out….all done in three days….and a couple of late evenings!!

The final friday (before the Saturday opening) at about 8 o’clock, deciding I could take no more, with a back so bad that the painkillers were not having much effect, and hardly being able to walk, I asked Andy to drive my car right up to the front of the shop (bearing in mind we are totally within our right to load and unload during certain times of the day – this being one of the times) I literally crawled bent double from the front door to the car, got in the car and looked over the road to see a police man sitting in his car mouthing the words “MOVE IT!!” gesturing frantically at the car….he had seen me crawl to the car in obvious pain. Andy came out having set the alarm and lock the shop to more verbal abuse from this police man “MOVE IT!!” (a man of many words!!!!) Andy shouted back that we were loading….the policeman once again searched deep and shouted “MOVE IT!!”….

……By this time in GREAT discomfort I am attempting to get out the car to give this policeman a piece of my mind, The policeman with his miami vice shades on (at 8 PM in October!!!) was oblivious to my violent gestures and verbal non appreciation of his ignorance …..Andy jumps in the car to a VERY steaming ME…the policeman drives off…

I wanted Andy to drive me round to the police station….alas it closes at 5.30 GRRRRRRRRRRRR

Anyway….Saturday 2nd October Always Special – Gift shop in Oswestryproudly opened it’s Secondfloor…..YES I know technically it should be called first floor (the ground floor is the shop floor with the door into the shop) But to us and a few of our customers it’s our SECOND floor….and really who cares what it is called…….we now have two floors in which to sell!!

So if you are reading this and live locally…..pop in and see us (that’s unless you were the policeman on duty that night giving a pain ridden lady grieve for getting in the car outside her own shop!!!!!)

What’s on the second floor……?

Mexican figurines, handcrafted beautifully, Candles of all shapes and sizes, Baskets made up as complete gifts – Beer/lager baskets, J2o/coke baskets, craft baskets, recycled models and bags made out of beer and soft drink cans.

Downstairs now we have more room our range of handmade soaps, bathmelts and waxmeltshave extended onto three large kitchen tables!!! joining them is our ever growing range of jewellery from around the world, handmade bags, more candles, new traditional sweet shop table, bearing old fashioned sweeties for all ages, and not forgetting a unique range of Nappy cakes, towel cakes, Swiss rolls, smoothies, ice cream sundaes and giant muffins….all made by Always Special from Towels, face cloths, socks, gloves etc

With Christmas coming Always Special has to be the place to visit….If not for unique gifts then just to stand and let the smells of the soaps and candles take you to that feeling of Christmas past!!!!

As always have Fun!!!!!!

Oswestry’s little gift shop sets it’s mark!!!

by on Apr.10, 2010, under Always Special

Sunny in Oswestry!!!

Sunny in Oswestry!!!

Always Special - Oswestry

Always Special - Oswestry

Today saw probably one of the highest sales in terms of value and satisfaction!!!!  A lovely lady who came into the shop about two weeks ago – looking for about seventy gifts (all the same) for the cast of her production – Scarlet pimpernel.  She and I wondered around the shop – with me suggesting various items – all of which I knew I could get in quickly and in the quantity she needed……she really liked the idea of some pretty shell bracelets….I kind of liked the idea of a shell necklace sitting on a red scarlet lace/cord (perhaps sitting in a red organza bag….I suggested) Nope she really liked the shell bracelets!!!

So off she went leaving me approaching a long bank holiday weekend to try and raise my supplier of this beautiful little gift!!! (still thinking that the red scarlet ribbon-ed necklace would have looked stunning!!!!!! :(

Then on the Saturday, the lady turned up again……this time with her daughter!!!! I showed the daughter the two options (keeping my opinions to myself – for once!!!!) The Red ribbon-ed/corded shell necklace or the shell bracelets……..The Daughter at once selected the Necklace!!!!! GREAT!!!! I knew this supplier would be easy to get hold of….and I also thought that packaged up this gift was going to look stunning!!!!

Today (a week on) the lady called in and picked up her 79 !!!! Necklaces, all sitting looking absolutely stunning in beautiful red organza bags, in a stunning handmade wicker basket….I have to say the amount I put through the till was fantastic (before you think I am tight – A hefty discount was given !!!! ;) …………) but her comments and “thank yous” was just out of this world….I would love to be there when she proudly hands out those little organza bags at the end of her production…..

The little gift shop in Oswestry pulls a punch amongst the big guys!!!!!!

Baby Gifts in Oswestry

by on Apr.06, 2010, under Always Special

Today was one of the busiest I have known we sold six Nappy Cakes and three New Baby Gift Baskets !!!!

I guess the Maternity wards are full at the moment in Oswestry and surround!!! Strangely enough five of the Nappy Cakes and two of the New Baby Gift Baskets were for Baby Boys!!!!! Not many “Pink” flavours being born at the moment!!!!

Our Baby Boy Nappy Cake

Our Baby Boy Nappy Cake

It is lovely when proud Grandparents….or doting dads…..just a neighbour pops into the shop and leaves feeling very chuffed that they have found something that has not cost the earth,  looks better than a bouquet of flowers and is not just an everyday over-priced sleep-suit!!!!! I often watch them walk down the road holding the Nappy cake proudly…….The buzz it gives me….that person has chosen my creation to give to the proud mummy  and daddy of the newborn baby ….for me that is very special!!!!!!

It would be lovely to get a reputation for my little gift shop in Oswestry, as being the place to go if you want something very special, very different, very affordable……that’s just “ALWAYS SPECIAL”

Have fun….Sharon…x

Eight weeks on….

by on Apr.04, 2010, under Always Special

Eights weeks have now past since that first Saturday morning in Oswestry….when I opened the door to my little gift shop!!!

I have to say the comments that have come back have been brilliant, “Just what Oswestry needed” -”there needs to be more shops like this in Oswestry” also people have been very complementary towards what I have in the shop, the jewellery and handmade goat’s milk have been very popular – with the nappy cakes and towel cakes starting to make their mark!!! Although if I had a pound for the amount of people who have come in and tried to order a proper fruit wedding cake – I’d now be soaking up the sun on a very hot beach!!!!! ;)

I love it when a customer comes into the shop, looking for a special gift (having probably spent days looking) and goes out the door holding one of my recycled plain brown distinctive bags – smiling and happy that they have found something unique yet special and affordable!!!!!! The buzz I get when they fill a basket bring it to the counter and have it transformed into a gift basket – complete with bows, feathers and all other “arty-farty” stuff!!!!!!!!!  that means more to me than the till ringing……I love it!!!!.

The flip side – The customer who comes into the shop and asks for your help in finding a gift ……it does not matter what you suggest, show or bend over backwards doing handstands nothing inspires them….or the customer with the complete brat of a kid who actually plays “lets throw a ball” with the bath bombs!!!!!!!!!

BUT for me the worst “customer” is the one who comes into the shop…..claiming that Oswestry needs more “little” (cheeky buggers….hey from a small acorn and all that!!!) anyway that Oswestry needs more “little shops” like this….and asks you to put posters up to “save our town” or lectures me for half hour on why the big super markets should not come to Oswestry and that Oswestry really need to say NO to these supermarket giants, that the town-folk of Oswestry need to support the “little shops”…..and that they feel so passionate about it…(one lady actually lectured me for over an hour!!!!!!) that they NEVER go anywhere else and they ALWAYS support the local “little shops” ….and then do you know what they do?????

………..they head for the door and leave!!!!

If you were to ask them what I sold they would not have a bloody clue!!!!!!! Tell you what – put your money where your mouth is!!!

I have to say I have some absolutely lovely regulars who come into the shop, even after just eight weeks they come in every week. “The lady who just buys a piece of soap every week”, the few ladies who cannot resist treating themselves to a piece (or two) of jewellery every week” and a couple of ladies who just come in to see what new stock I’ve got in that week and have a chat!!!

Although I swore I would never pick a paint brush up again (after painting the inside of the first floor and the entire outside of the shop all in two weeks) this week I have started to paint the second floor. Hopefully I can open the second floor in a couple of weeks……so this small acorn has started to sprout!!!!!

BTW….The lady who really supports her local shops….yeap you guessed it…..she aint been back!!!!!!!!

Have fun….Sharon  :)

A Shop called…

by on Apr.04, 2010, under Always Special

Ok….Where do I start?

Christmas came…and went. Not having enough to do with five kids, four cats and a completely mad Labradoodle puppy….I had a mad idea. To open a shop!!!

Having spent months social networking in order to promote my website, the website was now ticking along quite nicely and the fact that Google had rewarded all the hard work with giving us a page ranking of “ONE!!!” …..joyous ocassion….well nearly!!!!  :)

So back to the shop. The thought of a shop just would not budge…..so eventually I blurted it out to Andy….who agreed it was a good idea. Here is where I will cut a short story even shorter. By the 15th jan 2010 I held the keys to 20 Leg Street. Oswestry….on the 6th Feb 2010, on a sunny Saturday Morning I opened the door to “Always Special” for the first time!!!!!

Sounds easy eh?

NOT!!!!!

I think I had under estimated just how much hard work goes into having a large family and opening a shop!!!! The shop was completely repainted, walls pulled down, every cabinate and table purchased for the shop was painted to match…..I was seriously sick of Deluxe Ivory Lace, Cookie Crumble and Celtic Cream by the end.  Added to all this I was referred to have a course of Physio (“slight problem” with lower back) and ended up running twice a week to the Hydrotherapy pool !!!

The street we are in is lovely,  most of the ”neighbours” have been in and introduced themselves, and a big thank you to all my friends who have popped in to say hi…..moments like – sitting in the back of a hired transit, completely holding the traffic up, promising the local “traffic warden” that you will not be long….and wondering “should I have bothered opening a shop?”  just seem to fade

Now six weeks on…Always Special is settling into Oswestry. The comments that have come from customers have completely blown me over,  the lovely warm responses and thank yous make the few weeks of soul-destroying painting/cleaning and getting ready totally worth it!!.

Added to my Towel/Nappy cakes is a range of Handmade Jewellery, Handbags….and a stunning range of totally natural soaps (some made with Goat’s milk!!!) These are made for me by a lovely lady called Loretta, who I call “my mad professor” she will literally make soap out of anything!!! I have to say I would NEVER use any other soap again!!!

I want to expand the gift selection in the shop and am in the process of painting (ARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!) the second floor.  So that’s where I’m at……If you follow TheBruv’s on Twitter and miss the banter (usually between Ms Stephanosis) , then  I must take this opportunity to apologise….I usually bring my laptop to the shop….They cannot be trusted with a laptop and internet connection!!!! I would come home to a delivery of female kittens,  a purchase of a pub (and all it’s contents) or something worse!!! they will be back.

I will leave you with some pics of the shop on the day it opened….take care and thank you for taking the time to read this.  :)

An empty looking shop!!

BTW did I mention that I wanted to open an Hotel…………………………………………….. ;)

EarthMamaAngelBaby

by on Sep.07, 2009, under Always Special

If you are looking to purchase EarthMamaAngelBaby products we are now selling them separately on our website www.Alwayspecial.co.uk  thank you.

When I started playing around with the idea of towel cakes I realised that whatever the occasion….there could be a towel cake for it. While deciding what products to place into my Baby Towel cake I came across EarthMamaAngelBaby a beautiful website selling simply beautiful products for both Baby and Mum.

What actually grabbed my attention was the sister site Healing Hearts – Baby loss comfort. I have been very lucky that I have had four beautiful pregnancies and safely delivered four healthy babies. I feel very strongly for those ladies who have lost babies….and can not imagine how they feel.  I have never really considered before that after losing a baby….that the female body still goes through all the aspects of actually having that baby…..soreness, milk coming in….. very sad.

This site however was very open and sympathetic  in it’s approach to losing a baby….offering support and products for “mum” .  The following is a link to the site http://www.babylosscomfort.com

This lead me to Earth Mama Angel Baby products…..I read a bit about them and liked what I saw.. Earth Mama Angel Baby was founded by nurse, herbalist, and concerned mother Melinda Olson. Her mission is to treat the common symptoms of pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and baby care with pure, safe herbal remedies. Her knowledge of traditional herb medicine combines with evidence based research to help soothe and comfort mamas and babies naturally. All Earth Mama Angel Baby® products and teas are formulated without harsh chemicals, toxins or preservatives, and have the best safety ratings in the exceptional Skin Deep toxicity database. Proudly pure, Earth Mama Angel Baby® products are made only with worry-free ingredients: no 1,4-Dioxane, formaldehyde, phthalates, or toxins of any kind.

 http://www.earthmamaangelbaby.com

Earth Mama Angel Baby

Earth Mama Angel Baby

The EarthMamaAngelBaby Promise is…..

What we guarantee to each and every earth mama and angel baby

Safe, pure and natural products that work.

Mama created the only complete line of 100% natural, herbal, toxin-free skin and body care products and teas to help ease the common discomforts of the entire process of birth — from pregnancy through labor, postpartum and c-section recovery, breastfeeding, and baby care, and even the loss of a baby.

Earth Mama Angel Baby products contain only the highest quality, certified-organic or organically grown herbs and oils in our gentle handmade soaps, salves, lotions, bath herbs, aromatherapy sprays, massage oils and herbal teas. Our products are 100% toxin-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and free from all artificial preservatives, fragrances and dyes. Safety has always been our main concern, which is why you’ll never find 1,4-Dioxane, formaldehyde, phthalates, or any other toxic ingredients in any of our products. Unlike many so-called natural and organic products on the shelves today, an Earth Mama Angel Baby product has to pass Mama’s rigorous tests for safety, purity and efficacy: many of our products have undergone voluntary independent clinical testing as well. And since we care for Mother Earth as much as any mama, we use only eco-friendly recyclable or reusable packaging and packing materials. As a mother, nurse and herbalist, Mama’s promise to each and every earth mama and angel baby is that only pure, safe and effective products will leave the shipping docks. We believe that your gift from heaven deserves only the purest gifts from the earth.

So I went ahead and ordered some samples….. and I have to say the smell is just fantastic summing it up with a quote from the EarthMamaAngelBaby site ” If you want to know what heaven smells like, it’s that sweet, nuzzly baby place that makes your whole soul inhale”

Beautiful Products

Beautiful Products

….All my babies have all been “Johnson Babies” So anything “new” I have always shied away from…. but this product is just fantastic….when your precious little bundle is born, after spending the past few months in ideal sterile conditions the last thing you want is too harm that soft vulnerable skin….I always believed that Johnsons was “the best!!” I will not bore you with the facts.  Most mums nowadays are aware of the harmful BPA, phthalates, parabens, harsh chemicals, neurotoxins, carcinogens and much more added to baby products……The two opposing products speak for themselves…..

EarthMamaAngelBaby really speaks for itself….

Nappy cake – how to make them

by on Jul.23, 2009, under Always Special

Nappy Cakes in the UK – How to make a Nappy Cake.

When I first started playing with the idea of Always Special I was very keen on creating Nappy cakes. I had seen a few nappy cakes on the web….and they seemed very popular in the US often the centre piece of a Baby shower party – which I am led to believe have been around for centuries and are a tradition in many societies: however the origin of the Baby shower party is actually unknown. It is a wonderful way for friends and family to  share the excitement with mum-to-be, calm the new parent as she approaches the final few weeks of her pregnancy and offer advice and words of wisdom….also help with the expense of having a new baby by bringing baby shower gifts.

Many hospitals now in the UK are banning “real flowers” so these nappy cakes are a beautiful gift that can be placed on display…

Baby Girl Nappy Cake

Baby Girl Nappy Cake

Having had four children…I was determined to build all my nappy cakes with products that could be used….there are many on the market that have “dummies” (none of my babies have had a dummy!!) and well known baby Products in like Johnson’s….(most mums will be stocked up on what product they are going to use anyway) So I started my search for “products” that were different….but totally useful all ready to go into my nappy cakes.

I came across Baby Angel Wings……a towel/apron that wraps around mum’s (or dad’s) neck. when baby is finished bathing you gently lift out and then snuggle the apron’s wings around the baby…..no messing or struggling with a juggling act…..BABY VERSES TOWEL …..how many times have I struggled with a towel tucked under my chin and a slippery baby….

Our Angel-Wings Apron

Our Angel-Wings Apron

Chiggs baby feeding cards were another discovery for me…..a great invention…Remember those hazy nights and days of “when did I give baby that last feed?” “was it 2.30 0r 3.30?” well Chiggs have come up with feeding cards….where you simply turn the dial for a clear reminder of the last feed…

The list is endless…..my research took months but eventually I created my “nappy cake” in two forms…. regular and deluxe. Both of which can be seen in greater detail on my other website www.alwaysspecial.co.uk you can either grab ideas from there or actually purchase one of my nappy cakes.  :O)

Deluxe Baby Girl Nappy cake

Deluxe Baby Girl Nappy cake

 Deluxe nappy cake "Exploded"

How to make a nappy cake….

Well that was where the real work set in…..there was not much information out there on how to make a nappy cake??? …. So for what seemed like an eternity I set about playing with nappies!!!

I always use size 3….either pampers or huggies (I have never used anything else and my babes have never had sore bottoms….so I went with what I was comfortable with) I use size 3 because this means new mum/dad have not got a packet of small nappies on their hands should they have a big baby!! (my baby number two was over ten pound!!!  newborn nappies were a joke!!!) or if they chose not to unwrap the cake immediately it means that the nappies will fit a little later on..

Instructions for making a nappy cake.

1. Each nappy is rolled and secured with an elastic band…

Rolling the nappy

Rolling the nappy

Secure with an elastic band

Secure with an elastic band

2.place six of the rolled nappies, standing up on their ends, together and secure them with a larger elastic band. I always centre my nappies  around a Newborn Brush and comb set

Six nappies - first inner layer

Six nappies - first inner layer

3. place a further twelve nappies around the six and secure these with an elastic band

The outer layer of 12 nappies

The outer layer of 12 nappies

that is the first layer of the nappy cake complete.

Now many nappy cakes are decorated with ribbon and presented with the nappies visible and they look lovely, but I wanted to go one step further and cover my “cakes” in “icing” so I drape the sleep-suits/vests or the (deluxe version) bathing apron/blanket over the first layer, and secure with ribbons…..personally I love the idea of the new parents opening the cake to discover all the goodies hidden inside…

Cake iced in Baby Clothes

Cake iced in Baby Clothes

4. If you are attempting a second layer….then roll six further nappies and secure on top of the first layer…I always use elastic bands in both my nappy cakes and towel cakes. (I pricked my finger so many times when practicing the with the cakes that I ditched all sharp objects!!!)

The 2nd layer

The 2nd layer

The second layer is then “iced” in either a facecloth or (deluxe version) a fluffy baby blanket and topped with a cuddly toy….everything is secured with elastic bands….and a little imagination…;o)

When you are happy that the structure is fine….you can start to add the finishing touches to your nappy cake …..ribbons, flowers, butterflies…..let your creative side run…….

Add finishing touches

Add finishing touches

Wrap the entire nappy cake in clear cellophane and secure with a pull-bow…..

Finished product

Finished product

These nappy cakes look absolutely stunning when they are finished and are much nicer than handing a wrapped parcel of baby clothes over to the new parents….

…. if you have any questions or suggestions regarding these nappy cakes,  please do not hesitate to contact me….or leave a message.

Have fun…….;O)

cheers Sharon
